For too long, the big gyms have dominated and controlled the earring potential of personal trainers by making them believe that working in a gym is the best place to find new clients, build experience and grow their business. But, is it? Are the tides changing? Is the power finally back with the PT!
There has been silent unrest for years, talked only in the PT room. Take away the big facilities and shiny extras and what do you have ‘classes’, and aren’t they the best thing about the gym? For FIT Sake – NO! It’s really not, so what is then – it’s the personal trainers.
But why is it we often don’t think of them when we think about the gym? Trainers are often self-employed, put on zero-hour contracts or tiered payment structures on top of hefty gym commissions, that not even NASA could understand!
A system built on greed from the big operators to cash in on working trainers.
In recent years the fitness industry has undergone tremendous growth and demand. But, if you look at the pay for personal trainers it remains low. Trying to get a pay rise is like running the gauntlet of discussing with a 20 something manager who has never stepped foot in a gym! Sadly the development of their staff is forgotten with more interest focused on climbing the corporate ladder – when did it all go so wrong!
Digital apps and platforms have entered the market as a result. They provide the best services for personal trainers, without the faff. Ultimately ensuring that trainers have the tools to run their business with the help and guidance they need. This has changed the landscape in a way that trainers can now run a hybrid business across the industry.
I like to compare big gyms like oil tankers, bloody massive also very slow to move and change direction. Hence why they are getting left behind and the future of personal training is evolving every day with forward-thinking companies thinking more about personal trainers.
